   merchant, banker
   Born in Bourges around 1395, Jacques Coeur was a merchant who worked to develop French commercial relations with Spain, Italy, and the Levant, and established bank branches at Avignon, lyon, Limoges, Rouen, paris, and Bourges. He engaged in a variety of business and trading activities (banking, exchange, mining, precious metals, spices, and cloth). A creditor and banker to King charles vii, he held other official posts and contributed to the reform and strengthening of the nation's currency and the development and stabilization of its economy. He was sent on various diplomatic missions and subsidized the reconquest of Normandy (1449). Much envied because of his immense wealth, he was arrested for embezzlement but escaped from prison after three years. one of the most successful businessmen of his age, Coeur built a sumptuous palace at Bouges. He died while commanding a papal fleet against the Turks in the eastern Mediterranean.
